Sally was born on Guernsey in 1986 and splits her time between Guernsey and London where she has studios. She trained at London Fine Art Studios before completing a two-year Diploma in Portraiture at the Thomas Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. She was awarded the prestigious ‘Heatherley Portraiture Prize’ at the 2019 Heatherley Summer Exhibition and has been selected by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters to exhibit at their 2020 Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. She has also exhibited in a number of other exhibitions in London including at Lord Leighton House. She had her first solo exhibition ‘Portraits’ at the Gate House Gallery in Guernsey in December 2019.
Sally has always been interested in people, portraits and portraiture. She looks for snippets of charm in her compositions, capturing the beauty and fragility of passing moments in time when someone is siting for an artist. She tends to steer away from any strong distractions from the individual and enjoys a quiet and calm palette, while her brushstrokes balance playful texture and restraint.
Sally’s work consists of paintings in oil and drawings in charcoal completed from direct observation. She paints in natural light conditions over a period of three to six sittings, each of around two and a half hours. She works both in her studio and on location and her paintings vary in size depending on the composition and context.
